From my previous articles on gut health, due to the great feedback I thought I would keep the momentum going in that direction. This time I will be writing about an easy to make formula to restore your gut health. This certain natural supplement, which anyone can make, will benefit people from all walks of life. Whether you’re an athlete, the average joe, injured, pregnant or a little child. Broth is one of the most nutritionally dense tonics anyone can make!!!

It is used for recovery, bone health, gut healing, digestive issues and anyone wanting a clearer more youthful appearance.

So what is Broth?

Broth is simmered or boiled bones, cartilage, connective tissue from an animal. There are various animals by which you can use their bones to make broth; each part constitutes a different remedying form, depending on which part of the animal is boiled down. Ie: for a chicken you can use chicken feet, or the bones. For a lamb you can use shanks or the ribs, or even the tracheal lining to treat and prevent chronic conditions. Fish heads from a marine source has a rich source of iodine best used to treat thyroid function. So each part used has specific nutritional aid in body, depending on the health of the individual.

Using broth to cook with, stew and drink is a forgotten art and with the boom of wellness throughout society, it is coming back in a big way!

Where did we lose touch with this ancient art of broth?

It really started in 1908 when a Japanese researcher isolated a new substance from the seaweed kombu, inventing what is now known as MSG (monosodium glutamate). With the production of MSG this altered the need to use nice natural and healthful broths, made from dehydrating beef stock with vegetables. Instead introduced was beef/chicken stock cubes, made with msg, sugar and a host of other unwanted additives. These cubes had a longer shelf life, greater taste, cheaper production and easier exportation as a result. The issue was though that msg has been seen as a cancer causing agent, is highly addictive, shuts of the area of your brain telling your full and makes you endlessly crave it with no therapeutically healing affects like broth from animal bones. This is where using broth in our cooking first started to deteriorate, but is making a comeback, thank god!!

So why drink broth?

Nourishing broths date back to the stone ages, even mentioned in famous Greek playwrights. The nourishing mineral dense and amino acid rich based broth is full of important minerals used in bone and cartilage health, increasing their density, flexibility, cushioning joints and providing a youthful appearance. It does this via breaking down collagenous protein into gelatin via the cooking process. This gelatin is packed with all the minerals and amino acids needed for bone health.

You may have heard of these key minerals and amino acids: calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and potassium

Amino acids: glycine, proline, glutamine and alanine

All of this consists in bone broth. You could go and buy all of these separately in the supplement store and pay $300-$400 or you could make your own broth where all you need in purified water, veggies, quality grass-fed animal bones and some apple-cider vinegar.

If you are interested in making your own broth and utilising its healing potential please contact myself or go to the Instagram page @theholisticmovement to get the recipe for making your very own broth, the greatest and cheapest supplement you will ever use!!!
